Song Spotlight: You Never Change

youneverchange

How about 2020 so far, huh? Yikes.

Every day, we find a new catastrophe or scandal in the news. I cannot remember, in my brief lifetime, a more polarizing and divisive time in this country. A scroll through my Facebook news feed is flat-out exhausting. Unsubstantiated opinions everywhere. Outrage and vitriol overflowing. It's tempting to be overwhelmed by it all, isn't it? And don’t even get me started on COVID-19, right? The information, guidelines, and data provided to the public seems to change every hour. The foundation of this sin-sick world is shifting sand.

Praise God that He never changes!

I invite you right now to spend some time meditating on the unchanging character of our God. Are you weary with it all right now? Read these words from the great preacher, Charles Spurgeon and be blessed:

"The proper study of God's elect is God; the proper study of a Christian is the Godhead. The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God, is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father. . . .

"Oh, there is, in contemplating Christ, a balm for every wound; in musing on the Father, there is a quietus for every grief; and in the influence of the Holy Ghost, there is a balsam for every sore. Would you lose your sorrows? Would you drown your cares? Then go, plunge yourself in the Godhead's deepest sea; be lost in his immensity; and you shall come forth as from a couch of rest, refreshed and invigorated. I know nothing which can so comfort the soul; so calm the swelling billows of grief and sorrow; so speak peace to the winds of trial, as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead."

There is no more comforting assurance in the middle of 2020, for me, than the doctrine of the immutability of God. To be immutable means to be incapable of and unsusceptible to change. God is who He is. That's His Old Testament name, isn't it? YHWH means I AM. And that is His testimony about Himself: "I, the Lord, do not change" (Malachi 3:6a).

He is. He does not change. We change, but He stays the same. He is always both perfectly merciful and just (Numbers 14:18). He is always sovereign (Psalm 115:3). He is always good (1 John 1:5). He is always holy (Isaiah 6:3). He is who He is. He will never stop being God. His attributes will stay constant no matter what.

I love songs that remind me of the attributes of God.

I believe that the church desperately needs to be reminded that God is immutable. That is why I am excited to introduce a new song this Sunday, You Never Change by Austin Stone Worship. Walk with me through the lyrics.

Verse 1
Oh may I run to no other refuge, no other rest for my soul.
Oh may I drink from no other fountain, where living waters will flow.
Jesus, you're all I need.
Jesus, you're all I need.

Jesus is all we need. He is our rest. He is our source of Living Water (John 4:10; 7:38; Revelation 7:17).

Chorus
You are my light, may you be lifted high.
There is no other like Jesus Christ.
You are my story, you are my everything.
You are my glory, my God, and my king.
You are my rock and you never change, you never change.

Jesus is the Light of the world (John 8:12). He is the Rock of Ages (1 Corinthians 10:4; cf. 1 Corinthians 3:11). I remember when I was a child, hearing a quote from a gospel singer that has stuck with me: "Sometimes God will let you hit rock bottom to show you that He is the Rock at the bottom." Haven't you found that to be true? He is our refuge in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). And for the Christian, He is our everything (Colossians 3:4, 11).

Verse 2
No other power can break the darkness, no other hand that can fail.
Forever faithful, your love in stronger, I trust in no other name.
Jesus, you're all I need.
Jesus, you're all I need.

Oh Christian, trust Him. Forsake the hope you've placed in your favorite political candidate. Forsake the trust you've placed in your employment or your bank account. Forsake the regard you've paid to vain idols. Jesus is your only hope.

Bridge
My strength to stand, all of my days are in your hands.
My life to see your glory goes before me.
My strength to stand, all of my days are in your hands.
My life to see, your glory goes before me.
My king, you reign,
My rock and you never change.
No you never change.

Beloved, our God never changes. The testimony of the Scripture never returns void. He is all that He said about Himself. He will do all that He promised.

Are you weary? Are you frustrated? Are you at the end of your rope? Cast your mind upon the God who never changes. Run to the Rock of Ages. Take Spurgeon's advice and "be lost in His immensity." I encourage you to "muse upon the subject of the Godhead." You will find rest and hope in Him.

Contemplate God today. If you need help, grab your Bible. It's all about Him. If you want a great book to read on the subject, grab a copy of Knowing God by J. I. Packer.

You will be richly rewarded.
